Illinois State Geological Survey County Coal Data
Coal has been mined in 73 counties of Illinois. More than 4,500 coal mines have operated since commercial mining began in Illinois about 1810; fewer than 50 are currently active. To detail the extent and location of coal mining in Illinois, the Illinois State Geological Survey has compiled maps and directories of known coal mines. The ISGS offers maps at a scale of 1:100,000 and accompanying directories for each county in which coal mining is known to have occurred. Maps at a scale of 1:24,000 and accompanying directories such as this also are available for selected quadrangles.

Illinois EPA Water Quality Information Mapping Tool
The Illinois Water-Quality Information Mapping Tool provides access to water-quality information collected and distributed by the Illinois EPA. This information fulfills requirements identified in the Federal Clean Water Act. Users of the Mapping Tool can locate, create, and print maps of any area within Illinois providing lake and stream information as well as geographic reference information (streets, towns, highways, etc). This site was developed through a cooperative effort between Illinois EPA and the United States Geological Survey (USGS).

Illinois Water Well Interactive Map Service
The Illiinois Water Well (ILWATER) Internet Map Service provides information to water well information collected by the Illinois State Geological Survey (ISGS). The ISGS is an official repository for records of wells drilled in the state of Illinois. Paper records have been archived for over 700,000 wells. Some of these records go back as far as the late 1800s. Use this resource to access water and related well data for private water wells, engineering borings, and stratigraphic borings.
